Basic Requirements for Family Sponsorship:

To be eligible to sponsor your family member, you must be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act. You and your sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits you to provide financial support for your relative, if necessary. This agreement also states that the person becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support themselves.

Who You Can Sponsor:

You can sponsor your

• spouse,
• common-law partner,
• conjugal partner,
• dependent children,
• parents and grandparents,
• brothers or sisters, nephews or nieces, granddaughters or grandsons who are orphaned, under 18 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship.
• You may also sponsor another relative of any age or relationship but only under specific conditions.
• Certain accompanying relatives of the above are also eligible for sponsorship.

Sponsorship Obligations:

As a sponsor, you are required to sign an undertaking to provide the sponsored person with the basic requirements from the day they enter Canada until the term of the undertaking terminates. This means that you are responsible for their financial needs and other basic necessities during their stay in Canada. You remain obligated to the undertaking agreement for the entire period of the contract, even in a change of circumstances such as marital breakdown, separation, divorce, or a financial change in circumstances.

Sponsors Living Outside Canada:

Canadian citizens living outside of Canada may sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent children without dependent children of their own, who have not been convicted of an offense causing bodily harm. However, they must be able to demonstrate that they will reside in Canada after the sponsored persons become permanent residents.
