Are you a Canadian citizen or permanent resident looking to sponsor your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident of Canada? You may be eligible to sponsor your partner under the Family Class.

Here's what you need to know about the eligibility requirements for each category:

To be eligible to sponsor your family member, you must be at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act. You and your sponsored relative must sign a sponsorship agreement that commits you to provide financial support for your relative, if necessary. This agreement also states that the person becoming a permanent resident will make every effort to support themselves.

  • Spouse To sponsor your spouse, you must be legally married and your spouse must be at least 18 years old.
  • Common-Law Partner To sponsor your common-law partner, you must have been living together in a conjugal relationship for at least 12 consecutive months without any long periods apart. Your common-law partner must also be at least 18 years old and not legally married to anyone else.
  • Conjugal Partner To sponsor your conjugal partner, you must have been in a relationship with your partner for at least 1 year. Your conjugal partner must also be at least 18 years old, not legally married or in a common-law relationship with anyone else, and unable to live with you in their country of residence or marry you because of significant legal and immigration reasons, such as marital status, sexual orientation or persecution.

Choosing the Class of Application To sponsor a conjugal partner, you'll need to submit an application under the Family Class, which is processed outside of Canada. To sponsor a spouse or common-law partner, you can choose to submit an application under the Family Class or the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class. The latter option is available if your partner is already in Canada with valid temporary resident status.
